Ranch is an early-season, compact, productive cultivar, prized for its ability to grow in adverse conditions and ease of harvest.

Size and Habit: This is a smaller variety, typically growing 5 to 6 feet tall and wide, making it a great choice for home gardens and easy harvesting without a ladder. It has an upright, less sprawling growth habit compared to other cultivars.

Flowers and Fruit: In late spring to early summer, the plant produces large, flat-topped clusters (umbels) of white flowers that attract pollinators. These flowers develop into abundant clusters of small, dark purple to black berries by late August or September.

Growing Conditions: 'Ranch' is noted for its exceptional hardiness (USDA zones 3-9) and adaptability. It is particularly tolerant of non-fertile or poor soils and is more drought-resistant than many other varieties. It performs best in full sun but can tolerate partial shade.

Origin: discovered growing wild on an abandoned homestead, which is where it gets its name. It is believed to have been planted there as early as the late 1800s

Pollination: While partially self-fertile, it requires another American elderberry variety nearby for cross-pollination to ensure a heavy fruit yield.
