Why our Chestnuts?

At Overstory Farm, we grow choice European chestnut varieties that are celebrated for their superior flavor, texture, ease of peeling, and culinary quality. These cultivars are uncommon in the U.S., but represent centuries of careful selection and traditional craftsmanship. By growing these exceptional chestnuts in Oregon’s ideal climate and fertile soils, we’re helping restore diversity, flavor, and resilience to the local chestnut landscape. Currently our orchard is growing to maturity and while we are not yet selling chestnuts, there will be many in the years to come.

Once a dominant tree in North American forests, the American chestnut (Castanea dentata) was nearly wiped out in the early 20th century by chestnut blight. The loss of these trees devastated both ecosystems and local food systems, leaving the U.S. largely dependent on imported chestnuts—all of which are fumigated to meet import regulations. As a result, the only organic chestnuts available in the United States are those grown domestically. However, the vast majority of American-grown chestnuts come from a single hybrid variety known as ‘Colossal’, valued for productivity but less so for its flavor or culinary qualities.
