Pocahontas is a highly-productive cultivar with exceptionally large cymes (flower and berry clusters) that ripen late and grow on thick, upright branches.
Size and Habit: A fast-growing, deciduous shrub that typically reaches a height of 6 to 8 feet and a width of 8 to 10 feet. It has a strong, upright growth habit.
Flowers: Produces exceptionally large, flat-topped cymes of white flowers in late spring to mid-summer, which can measure up to 24 inches across.
Fruit: The flowers are followed by abundant, deep purple-black berries that ripen in late summer to mid-September, a few days later than other varieties like 'Bob Gordon'. The individual berries are medium-sized, but the clusters are very large, making harvesting efficient.
Hardiness: It is hardy in USDA zones 4-8 (or 3-9 in some reports) and is adaptable to a range of soil types, tolerating wet locations well. It prefers full sun to partial shade for best fruit production.
Origin: t was selected from a wild variety in Pocahontas, Arkansas, and released by the University of Missouri for its exceptional productivity.
Pollination: While partially self-fruitful, yields will increase significantly when planted with another American elderberry variety for cross-pollination.
