Organic American Elderberry Canes - Bob Gordon
PRE-ORDER NOW. PRODUCT SHIPS LATE WINTER / EARLY SPRING.
Bob Gordon is a top-performing, high-yielding mid- to late-season cultivar known for its large, sweet berries and unique downward-hanging fruit clusters that naturally deter birds.
Size and Habit: This is a multi-stemmed deciduous shrub that typically grows to a height and spread of 6 to 12 feet. Its growth is vigorous, but it can be managed with annual pruning since it produces fruit on new canes (primocanes).
Fruit: It produces large clusters of dark purple to black berries that are notably sweeter and larger than many other varieties. The fruit ripens uniformly, usually from mid-July through August, making for an efficient harvest.
Growing Conditions: It is hardy in USDA zones 4-8 (and sometimes 3-9, depending on the source) and thrives in full sun to partial shade with moist, well-drained soil.
Pollination While partially self-fruitful, yields will increase significantly when planted with another American elderberry variety for cross-pollination.
Origin: originated in Osceola, Missouri, where it was selected from a wild population of American black elderberry in 1999. The plant was discovered by farmer Robert Gordon, along with Charlotte Cooper and University of Missouri researcher Andrew Thomas.
